Cell Phone Death
So, my cell phone is officially dead. buttons 1, 4, and 7 don't work most of the time, in addition to the microphone being broken.

There is a phone I want (The Nokia N95 -- so, so sexy), but it is $750 retail, and no one is offering it with a plan yet.

I'm really tired of T-Mobile's lack of decent network speed. I want something that can get online and actually act like an internet connection. I'd also like a plan with some voice, unlimited texts and unlimited data for less than $100 a month. It seems like I can't actually have that with Verizon or Cingular/AT&T.

So, it looks like I'm going to be going with T-Mobile for a while longer. The question is, what do I do:

* Get a new phone via t-mobile, probably for free, but sign a contract for another year
* Get a new phone via ebay or something, pay a bit more up front, but no contract
* Get a new phone via a friend who has an old GSM phone lying around and doesn't need it. (Any of those around here? sderle and supersat come to mind...)

I really don't want to be stuck with T-Mobile forever, but I don't have much free cash to hand, and I don't want a really expensive plan.

Hopefully I'll find a cheap decent phone lying around that I can use for another 6 months, and then upgrade when what I really want is actually available...

(iPhone and openmoko are both decent options for many people, but most of what I do is texting or ssh while walking around. Neither of these have a keypad. Typing 'blind' is practically impossible for these things, and it's important enough to me that I can't give it up.)

Is Sprint an option in your area?

We've had GREAT service with them for the last two years. I just upgraded to the new HTC 6800 (the Mogul) and it's fantastical. It runs WM 6 and, uh, is fast. And the EvDO is great.

And it has a slide out keyboard.

People are getting them for ~$250 or $280. They just came out Saturday.

Uh, I don't really know the technical specifics, but it is great and I love it to death. So, check it out? eh?

Why wasn't I logged in? Gah.

Also, Sprint's unlt. data plan is $15 or so a month. It's the cheapest of the major cell phone companies that I've seen.

Looks like their unlimited texts are cheap ($10/month) but the unlimited data for 'phone as modem' is $40/month. Which does put it under my $100 limit for the cheapest plan, which is good. I might go with this -- I'll spend some more time looking at it.

Dude, I'm not even on EDGE, I'm on GPRS. Anything is better at this point.

I had kind of hoped to avoid Windows Mobile if possible. It doesn't offer me anything, and walking around with a Windows phone in my pocket seems vaguely anti-me :p

It seems like the Boss wants to expand into the Mobile World with MetaCarta stuff... I'm trying to get him to lean towards buying the N95 for me and an iPhone for him :) That would be cool. Especially if I can also get them to cover the plan... mmm... expense reports... :)

More seriously, I think I'm going to try and do something to live short term, rather than pick something up longer term that doesn't let me switch. We'll see how the rest of the week goes, and go from there.
